Recipe Makeover: Sandwich

A sandwich is a pretty healthy choice, right?

Well--that one isn't! I love sandwiches. But when I started Weight Watchers, I realized that they are not really as low point or "healthy" as I had previously thought. Luckily, though, I learned that there are ways to make a sandwich a lot healthier, to cut out a lot of calories, and to still keep great taste!

Here is how I makeover my sandwich:
First, I trade the bread out for sandwich thins.
Have you ever tried these things? They are amazing. And each pair of sandwich thins has about the same calories/carbs/protein/etc. as just one slice of bread! I was worried that the sandwich thins would be too thin and floppy to hold up to my sandwich needs, but they hold up extremely well--especially when toasted. They also work as a great replacement for hamburger buns! The only negative is that they are more expensive than bread--but I think they are definitely worth it.

Second, I skip the mayo and go for mustard only.
Seriously, you won't miss your mayo. And, if you don't like mustard (Mandi! :), then at least switch to low-fat mayo.

Third, I think about my meat.
I love bacon. I love breaded chicken. I love sausage. But these things really don't have place on a health-conscious sandwich. Make better choices--ham, turkey, or grilled chicken. And don't go crazy! Go for less meat than this:

Fourth, I skip the cheese.
I love cheese and thought that leaving it off my sammies would be a big problem. Wrong. I found that with all the other stuff I pile onto my sandwich, I really don't even notice the missing cheese. Seriously. Now, if you don't think you can go cheese-less, try a different cheese. Cheeses like feta cheese and goat cheese are a lot more calorie-conscious then cheddar, American, or muenster.

Fifth, I pile on the veggies.
If you like a full sandwich, load it up with vegetables! Lettuce, tomato, pepper, onion, sprouts, cucumbers, pickles, olives--the possibilities are endless!

Finally, I enjoy!
